notes

One of L.A.'s favorites, and it's no wonder why," is how Lisa Fox from Star 98.7 introduced Cindy Alexander to the sold out crowd at the Troubadour. It is rare that an artist has so much to offer her audience: talent, beauty, charisma, songs that people can't help but sing along with, and lyrics they want to quote to their friends.

Besides being crowned the L.A. Music Award's Outstanding Songwriter ('98) and nominated for Outstanding Female Artist, Cindy's debut CD See Red was also nominated for L.A. Music Awards1999 Indie Pop Album of the Year. She's been named one of L.A.'s Hottest Unsigned Bands by Music Connection, Best of Local Licks by K.L.O.S. 95.5, "Buzzing" by Hits Magazine, and has topped the charts at mp3.com, soundclick.com, and billboardtalent.net. Thanks to the world wide web, Cindy now answers fan mail from all over the world.

Born and raised in L.A., Cindy credits her parents for instilling within her the love of music when, at age six, they gave her the gift of piano lessons. In addition "my Grandma was a music teacher and, growing up, she would play the piano and I would sing," Cindy recalls. By age 12, Cindy was mentored by Nathan Lam, "vocal coach to the stars," and picked to record an album of children's music called "Regeneration" which was narrated by Ed Asner.

Throughout high school and college (Cindy is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of U.S.C.), Cindy continued to sing in choruses, and starred in dozens of plays and musicals, including regional theater in L.A. and San Francisco. After endless theatrical runs and some stints on T.V. and film, Cindy returned to her true love, music. "I found it so much more satisfying to write and perform my own material, and be myself."

In 1999, Cindy released her debut album, See Red, which she describes as "a collection of demos that I wrote over a three year period. It is a very personal record. Each song is like a polaroid of a particular point in my life." See Red was produced by Dave Darling (Boxing Gandhis/Meredith Brooks/Brian Setzer). Rave reviews have compared Cindy's work on See Red to Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morisette and Sarah McLachlan.

As one critic noted, "The lyrics on See Red are some of the finest we have seen in quite sometime. Cindy Alexander is a world class indie artist."

Cindy writes songs that are original, quirky, unflinchingly honest, and fun. With her smash Sick of Myself, Cindy has given teenagers a new anthem: "Thought it was you/ so I shut you out/ Thought it was them/ until I figured it out/ I screwed up everything and everybody else/ I am my nemesis/ I'm sick of myself." Time Falling Down and Better Than I Am are two pure and beautiful songs about love and desire, and both have been tapped by the film industry.

Time Falling Down appeared in the film The Giving Tree starring Christina Applegate and Molly Ringwald, and Better than I Am was featured in the trailer for 20th Century Fox's Here on Earth.

Cindy has shared the stage with national acts such as Vonda Shepard, Harry Dean Stanton, the Bacon Brothers, Tara MacLean, Lowen & Navarro and Dan Bern. She was one of the few artists chosen to perform on amp3.com's "Emerging Artist" stage at Woodstock '99.

I am very impressed! I enjoyed this CD from start to finish....beautiful voice! I better leave something to say about her other two CD's which I also bought.

Run to your wallet, get your credit card - you can not miss this cd if you want to have the finest independent music in your collection. Phenomenal voice, smart songwriting and no pretenses. Catch her live if you can - I hesitate to say it but, she's even better on stage.

  • Believe the hype!

Finally--I've found a kindred spirit! How is it possible that Cindy crawled inside my head, dug through all the cobwebs, swept off the dust, and found an actual name for my pseudo-manic depressive condition? I'm happy to report that this fabulous artist has done just that, AND she gave me a new theme song. That's a lot for one artist to do; she has to be exhausted! Overall, Cindy is a terrific singer/songwriter and vocalist. She has an amazingly versatile voice, and her witty lyrics astound me each time I pop SEE RED in my CD player. (In my mind, Cindy seems like a brilliant cross between humorist Dorothy Parker and Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls. She writes songs that are quirky, hysterical, intelligent, and, at the same time, edgy and poignant.) I ordered SEE RED from another venue (and I hang my head in shame every moment I think of it) a few weeks ago and, after listening to the songs, immediately ordered SMASH at CDBaby.com. I can't wait for SMASH to arrive because I'm on the verge of wearing my copy of SEE RED out! Cindy, you are fantabulous and splendiferous. Keep on rockin', indiegrrl!

  • My First Exposure to Cindy
    author: John

I admit that I am an old timer. I heard this CD and had to buy her Smash CD too. She seems to be on the same wavelength as my kids. I can hear and understand her vocals. Her band is creative and supports her. Mainly, her vocals and lyrics are most thought provoking and understandable. This CD is wonderfully done, even for an old rock and roller with bad ears. Her lyrics remind me of many old days. I am thinking that if Cindy can put this kind of music together, I will get my old guitar out and start playing again. May she never dye her hair maroon!

Cindy Alexander is going to be a big star soon. See Red is just the start. She has proven that she has what it takes to be a major star. Her lyrics are heart felt and fun. Her voice is pure and rich. I've heard Cindy sing in person at a party and she sounds just as good sitting around the kitchen playing for friends as she does on stage or CD. That is what an artist is. Time for the music industy to take note.

  • The songs get better the more you hear them
    author: Robby C. - Roguerob

Discovered Cindy at the Mint and bought the cd that night. After many (many) repeat listenings, I am hooked. These songs have the rare quality of getting better the more you hear them, and they have the other rare quality of being terrific to sing along with. (Like Elton John songs - a great compliment to Ms. Alexander.) Caught her again last night (4/4) at the Roxy, and she just gets better and better. Very easy on the eyes, too (an understatement). She has dynamic stage presence without any artifice, a true talent. My only question is: why isn't she HUGE yet?~

  • The most exciting discovery I've made in years!
    author: Tim Lomas

What's the definition of perfection ... personally, I don't know but Cindy's CD comes dangerously close to it! Cindy's music is undeniably powerful, driven not only by some great melodies but also by her strong, insightful lyrics. This has been an almost permanent fixture in my walkman for some time now.

  • Great hooks and great looks nothing falls short
    author: Deborah Gee

"See Red" is a wonderful compilation of great hooks and lyrical wit. The material takes you places inside. With Cindy Alexander's sometimes bluesy vocal approach to colors of angelic tones mixed into the mix of quirky, funny and witty you have a MUST LISTEN TO THIS CD so if you don't have it, BUY IT! Great stage presence, filled with all the wit you can soak up.

  • A beautiful voice, much musical talent, good brains & a body that’ll put men on
author: Jos Van Den Boom, Crossroads, Brto-radio, Holland

L.A. Rocksinger Cindy Alexander really got everything she needs to become a big popstar. A beautiful voice, much musical talent, good brains, a body that’ll put many men on fire and very good (selfpenned) songs that’ll make many musicians jealous. There’s only one thing missing yet. A recorddeal with a major recordcompany. But, thanks to the efforts of some idealists like the people of JamCat Records and –for Holland- Dutchy Music, Cindy can make her first steps on the international platform. The music of Cindy, who shared the stage with Vonda Shepard, Dan Bern and (LA) local heroes The Bacon Brothers and Lowen & Navarro, seems to be inspired by her own heroes: Tom Petty, Joni Mitchell, The Pretenders (Cindy’s voice sometimes sounds like Chrissie Hynde). The debutalbum of Cindy Alexander is produced by David Darling (Meredith Brooks). It’s a nice pattern-card of the very beautiful songs of Cindy. Some of the songs are catchy (rock). There are also beautiful ballads on the album, while Joei is a potential hit. Don’t be astonished when Cindy Alexander will be enumerate with big stars like Natalie Imbruglia, Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morisette within a few years!

  • Lyrics and melodies that evoke some serious human emotion!
    author: Ilana Johnson

Cindy Alexander's CD See Red is just one of those albums that I can't get out of my CD player! Her songs tell the story of my life. I particularly like her song " I See Stars." It's all about losing yourself in a love that's not so right for you. I can relate to that. Rarely do I listen to a CD where I like ALL of the tracks, but this one is solid all the way through. You couldn't skip over one of the songs if you wanted to. They all draw you in, hypnotize you with an original combination of funky music and the voice of an angel. This has got to be one of the best indie records out right now! Definitely like six hundred thumbs up!

  • The best collection of songs I've heard in a long time
    author: Lotsa Zoetemelek

See Red had me seeing more than just red, this cd is jam-packed with songs filled with emotion and melody. Cindy delivers a strong yet angelic vocal performance to each song, serving them up like a delicious entree. A cd that can't seem to find it's way out of my disc changer.
