notes
This record is way cool. Sonically, formally, lyrically, it manages to hit all the right buttons. Each of the songs has an incredible arc, a sense of drama, that draws you in and won't let you go. And it holds you on at least the three levels mentioned above: they are miniature musical journeys taking you to one place through sounds, structures and, of course, words. They make you forget about the passage of time in the normal world and pull into the world of the tracks.
This is music for adults, not in the sense that children shouldn't listen to it, but in the sense that people who love and care about the quality and integrity of music will find things here to treasure. Whether the issue is the vagaries of love, the harm that people do to one another, or something else altogether, this is the work of someone who has a deep understanding of human nature and music-making.
(And, in the interest of full disclosure, I play on one track. I had no idea how things would be in the end, but the final result far exceeds anything I might have imagined).
