Daniel Ahren Sketches New Pop Music Niche with Unique Arrangements of Old Classics
NEW YORK, July 10, 2001 - It often takes quite a while for a twenty-something to figure out where he fits in among his peers, especially for an artist trying to arrange his thoughts and ideas into something cohesive. With his release of Sketches from a Cartoon Graveyard, percussionist Daniel Ahren has found his place, putting his mark on pop music with creative renditions of songs originally recorded by the likes of Elton John, Aimee Mann, U2 and others.
With three original compositions interspersed among eleven pop tunes, Ahren proves that classical training and pop sensibility can be natural complements to each other. Each song on Sketches features traditional and experimental percussion instrumentation - from a Musser marimba to "amplified foot" - while following the theme of Ahren's coming of age amidst his struggle to not, as Paul Simon says, "end up a cartoon in a cartoon graveyard."
"I have wanted to record this album for years, but wasn't sure what form it would take. This album has been the perfect outlet for me to combine all aspects of my musical background," said the twenty-three year old Ahren. "Much of my inspiration came from taking the Baja Marimba Band's style of performing complete pop tunes for percussion, along with Bill Frisell's knack for arranging pieces spanning various time periods. I'm fortunate that I have this opportunity to pay tribute to some my favorite artists in a unique way."
The songs covered on this recording include Aimee Mann's "Save Me," Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross," U2's "October," Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," Carole King's "So Far Away" and Paul Williams and Ken Asher's "Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie soundtrack. Original pieces "Sunrise Over Jordan," "Raindrops" and "Touching Souls - Op. 1" are tastefully included in the mix, which features Ahren on percussion. He also provides vocals on two of the tracks, as narration to this soundtrack to his life that he sketches out for all to hear.
According to the liner notes written by fellow musician Toby Bonagura, "Nostalgia is a dangerous thing and should be avoided like the plague." He adds: "Classic movie moments and jazz-inspired original pieces ... create a fully-realized body of work, conjuring thoughts of lucid dreams, yearning, hope and salvation."
