notes

Singer of songs & ballads
b. 1980 d. ----

Adam Luhta leaves a weird and disturbing impression. Given his nordic cheekbones and apparent flair for mock turtlenecks, "My Black Mother" is not the first song one might expect to hear popping off his fine eponymous album (Self-Released). But pop it does, only the first in a string of disarmingly self-revelatory numbers delivered in his deceptively flat, unaccented voice. Putting aside the obvious Dylan comparison, there is something about Luhta's minimal compositions and performances that speaks in a distinctly 21st century manner, a subtle embodiment of the eternal fellow in the corner eschewing participation, content to pluck away in self-imposed oblivion. Luhta, a mountian stream to be observed, and learned from.
-David Mead - American Songwriter Magazine

The success of Luhta's debut effort is largely due to the emotional connection he establishes with the listener, increasingly bolstered by the introspective lyrics on every track. What's most striking is Luhta's ability to match his voice to the sentiment of each individual song. The vocals are refreshingly coarse on "Muckrunner Blues," and Luhta channels his inner Willie Nelson on "Talking Hunt." Luhta's voice drifts like a veteran troubadour on "Sweet William," with a maturity uncharacteristic of a 26-year-old. As a whole, the album is a throwback to simpler musical times: The acoustic guitar creates a semblance of sophisticated back-porch picking, and the occasional harmonica adds to the down-home, bluesy feeling of Luhta's tracks. The chords extract heartfelt empathy like that of traditional American folk songs.

  • High Quality Songs
    author: Ed Thomas

I have made a habit lately of looking for new artists on CD Baby, and I consider this to be one of my top finds. First off, the sound quality of the CD is beautiful. Adam’s voice and his guitar sound like the good ol’ days when records were made in real studios. As it turns out this one actually was. The liner notes reveal that it was recorded at Electric Lady, which is one of the last few real studios left. I’ve become a real fan of Adam since I got this CD, but I haven’t been able to find much biographical information about him. His website and his MySpace don’t help the cause much. Reading the liner notes will tell you that he is from Ohio, but the rest is kind of strange. The only other fact I have been able to gather is that he is 26 years old. He doesn’t write lyrics like a 26 year old though. He doesn’t sing like one either. There is an uncommon emotional depth here. It gives me hope in the younger generation of musicians out there. This is just some solid good stuff. Highly recommended!
