ABstraXT is:

Greg Berger - Bass
Chris Abbott - Guitar
Wally Creighton - Vocals
Tony Steele - Vocals
Ritchie Smith - Drums

ABstraXT is a Cambridge, Maryland based Hip-Hop/Rock band that has its own distinct sound by mixing Rock/Metal with True Hip-Hop style lyrics. The name ABstraXT comes from the word "abstract" meaning no direction. Although ABstraXT's main M.O. is Hip Hop/Rock, they follow no format in writing their music. ABstraXT uses what ever they feel is needed to get their point across including DJ Scratches/Samples/Live Guitars/Live Bass/Hip-Hop Lyrics/Harmonies and Live Drums all directed to an IN YOUR FACE style of music.

ABstraXT was formed in early May 2001 by its five seasoned members who wanted to try a new style of music.

Tony Steele (Vocals) and Wally "Ripper" Creighton (Vocals) come from a strong Hip-Hop background and have been working together vocally for over ten years. They have both established themselves as two of the Eastern Shores Hottest and known MC's through shows, Local Media and several independent albums. In September 1994 they obtained a production deal at Twin-Loop Studios in New York where they worked on a album produced by Robert Brown and DJ Clash who is credited on LL Cool J's "Moma Said Knock You Out Album"

Chris Abbott (Guitar) comes from a hard rock/metal background and has played in several bands over the last twenty years one of which opened for the band Foghat. Chris has many years of live sound engineering, studio engineering and performance experience. Chris is currently handling all recording, engineering and mixing duties for ABstraXT's debut CD in his studio.

Greg Berger (Bass) comes from a funk/rock background and has played in numerous bands. Greg has played in bands that have opened shows for the bands Quiet Riot and Foghat. Greg has had years of experience in performing live as well as studio experience.

Tony, Wally, Chris, Greg and Ritchie decided to all come together and mix all musical backgrounds. The result was a sound they call ABstraXT!!

  • ABstraXT - Bring The Pain
    author: Liam

While the album opens a little reservedly with the atmospheric but pushy; ‘How Much More’ with its pulsing guitar riff and haunting vocal trade offs that emanate from aggressive delivery. It is not until the joyous and catchy; ‘Rowdy’ that things really start to progress forward. While the lyrics are far less deep and the song is no more competent than it’s predecessor it would have made an ideal opener. The lights dim and the world falls into shadow once again when the edgy; ‘My Sins’ launches into its funky bass and delightfully tense guitar sounds. Unfortunately the chorus is far from a high point and comes across as a let down. However it takes a strong song to over come such a downfall and this one overcomes it as its introspective lyrics guide you through an ever intriguing and deeply intelligent tale. ‘Faded Mirror’ is a very pleasing and moving song with its slow alt. rock introduction that submits to the verses attractive rap vocalizations. While it has a religious undercurrent; ‘I see the faces of a thousand races, calling for a savior’. It is far from imposing and it’s dark and positively haunting writing creates an interesting and wholly contrasting mid album song. Abstraxt can product some rather powerful rock tracks in the form of; ‘Thanks To You’ and the interesting answer machine introduced; ‘Bring The Pain’ which lets forth a volley of slamming guitars and bass that maintains a simplistic backdrop throughout the masculine track – similar to the sound honed by Germany’s H-Blockx. ‘Dirty Shore’ opens with a dirty southern rock riff that slips into palm muting during the high speed rapped verses; before emerging once more from beneath a sea of languid wah laden sound. The bridge presents not only a fun lyrical/bass breakdown but also a charming guitar solo that is often missing from this style of music – why this is the case I will never know. It not only compliments it but actually improves the feel of the songs. This is definitely a positive that will elevate this extremely talented and tight band even higher. The bluesy rap of; ‘Rough Stuff’ is creative and catchy - yet is excelled by; ‘Tell Em What?’ an extremely forward going, strongly paced song that is surely the most instantly memorable and accomplished crossover track on the record. Abstraxt are a very talented band, both vocally and in some instances musically. The vocal trade offs are very well put together and the vocalists are very complimentary of each other. There is sincerity throughout this CD whether they are celebrating male bravado or soul searching. This is evident in the rather beautiful, dare I say - Amazing; ‘Remorse’ that really demonstrates the sheer vocal talent and actual singing range of the band. While there will be some instant favorites in the form of; ‘Rowdy’, & ‘Remorse’ this is a very strong record with no real low points. So while it will require an element of patience to really explore (without a feeling of repetition) it is well worth undertaking. Standout Tracks ‘Rowdy’, ‘My Sins’, ‘Faded Mirror’, ‘Tell Em What’, & ‘Remorse’. Added: March 30th 2004 Reviewer: Liam Thomson Score:
