Anything Box is four guys using guitars, noise and computers to create binary tripped-out, emotionally tinged elektrodelic (their word) pop music. The name comes from an obscure Sci-Fi short story from the 60's about a young girl who sees an idealized fantasy world when she cups her two hands.

Anything Box began in the bedroom of lead singer/songwriter Claude S. as an escape from the banality of everyday life in Paterson NJ, an urban town whose claim to fame is a High School principal who carried a bat in the halls, and where the first Colt 45 was built. Amidst the drug deals outside his kitchen window and bar fights across the street, Claude dove within the introverted comfort of songwriting influenced by John Lennon, Disco, Pink Floyd, The Kinks, Joy Division, New Order, and Kraftwerk.


After 25 releases and over 300 shows to match, Abox (as they are known to their fans) has since become an international oddity of electronic music. Live, their energy is matched only by their antics and the switching of instruments. With Paul Rjinders on guitars and synths, Dave South on bass and samples, and Gary (Claude's brother) providing back-beats with his mouth, they have created an ever-evolving sonic signature. In a word, elektrodelic.

  • Excellent prologue to their transition

    I love thier 1st release - Peace. If not for that album, I wouldn't have searched them out & found that A-Box thumbed their noses at the system, going indie instead. Recovered has enough programmed sequences to keep those searching for their retro sound satisfied, but also sets the stage for the OOP Electrodelica, and the albums available here. Like U2, some bands smartly changed to reflect the changing times. Recovered hints at what is to come without betraying their past.

    "Recovered" is a good CD & has the usual Anything Box flavor, but it's slightly different than "Peace" and "Worth." I like it - very moody - and it's Anything Box... can you actually go wrong buying their stuff?

    If you were a die hard Anything Box fan back in the 80's and 90's, then this CD is for you. The style and sounds go hand in hand with Peace & Hope. This is the sound that made me love Anything Box as a young adult. It brough back great memories. Excellent CD.

  • Recovered -- a re-discovered gem

    Recovered marks a fine discovery in the Anything Box archives. Originally a collection of older songs once thought to be lost. The songs were discovered, restored, re-mastered and packaged as the Recovered Album. The songs span several years, so the sounds and influences can be slightly different through the album and a little less defined. Nonetheless, its great news that these lost gems have been made available. The dark Emily and Goodbye remind one of the Worth album. While the upbeat You Make Me Feel and perky Teardrop Collector come closer to the sound from the band's Hope album. The guitar (real or synth?) driven Sunday, is Claude at his song writing best. Thankfully, these songs were salvaged and made available. Anything Box's catalog runs deep and it's nice to get a listen to some great songs we almost missed out on.

    I have seen mixed reviews about Recovered, but that needs to be cleared up. The is a truly incredible work. It is like finding that rare CD of a group you somehow missed, and you throw it in your player and love it instantly. It nearly equals the Worth album in terms of heart felt lyrical value, and it is melodically superior. Such a gem.
