notes
Asi (aah-see) from the Swahili dialect, meaning "it's obvious". And we are obviously just trying to make good music.
"We are not attempting to reinvent the wheel, just trying to put a different spin on it."
Asi (aah-see), is a New York based band whose instrumentation might be familiar, but whose approach to music is both varied and different. All of the bands material is original and written by the groups co-founders, Kendall Scott (guitar/keyboards) and Alonzo Wright (saxophone/flute/percussion/wind synth).
Asi (aah-see) is joined on this project by Gene Lake on drums (David Sanborn, Steve Coleman, MeShell N'degeocello), Reggie Washington on bass (Branford Marsalis, Steve Coleman, Roy Hargrove) and Jeffery Haynes on percussion (Pat Metheny, Cassandra Wilson, Lizz Wright)
"I have always felt that a book is not a book until it has been read, and with this recording I think the same sentiment could be applied. With the writing, playing and recording of this music, the process is only completed when it is listened to and shared.

Louisville Music News
author: Martin Kasdan JrFrom the evidence on this self-titled project, "it's obvious" that Wright is an inventive and talented musician and composer in his own right. Wright and Scott, along with Gene Lake on drums, Reggie Washington on bass and Jeffery Haynes on percussion, have put together a recording that is like a gumbo pot bubbling over with African-influenced grooves, funk and post-bop jazz. From the opening number, "All that Remains," it is clear that these musicians have taken a fresh approach to their work. Scott's "Memories of a Journey" showcases Wright's flute, while Wright's "Blues for Bearden" musically evokes not only the not! ed visual artist, but also seems to mesh Coltrane with a more modern backbeat. Produced and recorded by Wright, it is available at www.cdbaby.com, among other sites. This deserves a wider audience.
an excellent work of art.
