While some hip hop MC's climb up on their high horse, taking a left on the road of didactic parables and refusing to look back, these cats offer education without the soapbox, an ultimately refreshing brand of beats and rhymes. ~ CD Baby

notes

Agent 23 is what would happen if Bob Dylan and KRS-1 get mixed in that teleportation pod from ‘The Fly’. 10 Years of rhyming have honed his technique, and 10 years of travelling the U.S.A. and beyond, driving, flying, hitchiking, train hopping, and backpacking have supplied a wide variety of content for his stories and songs.

He has performed across the nation as a soloist and as a part of the notorious G.F.E., a collective of musicians and MCs whose roots began in improvisational street performance and eventually evolved into a practiced touring unit with over 100 original songs, and 4 full-length albums. Along the way, he has shared stages with countless legends, from RUN DMC, MOS DEF, and MASTA ACE, to SOULIVE, SOUND TRIBE SECTOR 9, and THE P-FUNK ALL STARS, and has appeared on recorded tracks with GEORGE CLINTON, MTV Battle Champion BREEZ EVAH- FLOWIN, TAME 1 of the ARTIFACTS, and JEN DURKIN of DEEP BANANA BLACKOUT and THE BOMB SQUAD.

Agent 23’s style is diverse, and ranges from the territories of lyrical gymnastics and punch-lines to scathing political tracks, and the joys and trials of raising a family and staying positive in an increasingly negative world.

‘The Road Less Travelled’ is his 3rd solo album in as many years. The spearhead project for the Asheville, NC based Miner League Records, and all the art is original work by JOE BUCK, co-founder of MLR. This work features all production by BSKI ROCKS, a superb beatmaker and respected crate digger, with over a decade of material under his belt. BSKI has produced for C-RAYZ WALZ, BREEZ EVAHFLOWIN, TAME 1, G.F.E., and has DJ’d on tour with MR LIF + AKROBATIK, SOULS OF MISCHIEF, and BREEZ.

The 14 tracks that make-up this album are seething with funk and soul, and lyrically explore the alternative thought patterns of a subculture lifestyle where originality is king and gaining experience outweighs the endless the endless hunt for cash. Guest spots include ADAM STRANGE of G.F.E., BREEZ EVAHFLOWIN, and JEN DURKIN. Drawing from a life filled with strange journeys and incredible characters, it is a breath of fresh air against the stuffy repetition of mainstream hip hop.

It's been a number of years now that the Granola Funk collective has been creating their own breed of hippie hop (I'm sure they hate that term, but not a lot of rappers rep for the Rainbow Gathering set) and they're still going strong. On this, their latest affiliated offering, there's no signs of slowing down. Keeping it abstract but never straying away from straight up hip hop, this album is so deep with knowledge that it's sure to demand multiple listens. Concentrating mostly on turntablism and fat bass lines, the beat runs deep and the lyrics take the wheel, touching on frustrations with life, pleading with the uninformed but not disrespecting. While some hip hop MC's climb up on their high horse, taking a left on the road of didactic parables and refusing to look back, these cats offer education without the soapbox, an ultimately refreshing brand of beats and rhymes.
