notes
The 8 Legged Monster was born in 2007 in an effort to reintroduce an element to jazz that has been lacking in recent years: the excitement of densely arranged small group big-band music. With a nod to tradition 8LM brings new life to the genre through musical exploration. Since its inception, 8LM has been turning heads in the Bay Area's Jazz community. Founder Mike Irwin's arrangements offer the classic sound of early Bebop, yet with an entirely new attitude and approach to harmony. The Monster has such a distinct sound because they encompass all the musical styles that the jazz lineage has passed through, from swing to free-jazz, yet they bring to it an original, fresh sound. Already a fast favorite amongst the SF jazz community of musicians, they're one of the most entertaining and fun new bands to see.
The Band Members are: Mike Irwin Johnson (guitar/arr.), Mike Olmos (trumpet), Rob Barics (clarinet), Gabe Eaton (alto sax), Noel Jewkes (tenor sax), Danny Grewen (trombone), Fil Lorenz (baritone sax), Smith Dobson (drums) & Seth Ford-Young (bass).

Red Hot
author: Gloria JacksonSuch a lively band with a classic, yet, new sound. I can see why they call it the Monster... it's a big, loud band and the players are very boisterous.
Great Band/ Great Record
author: Cindy ShepardThe 8Legged Monster is the hottest band in the San Francisco Bay Area right now. Some of the best musicians in San Francisco are in this band. There's no other band playing music of this quality. I urge you to buy this record and go see these guys if you get a chance. You won't regret it.
Great live band
author: Jason WeeksThese guys just had a CD release party in SF at the club deluxe. Wow, what a great show! Tune after tune of raw power. I'm a fan, great stuff guys.

So much fun
author: Brad DavisTheir CD is pretty darn good but they have a quirky kind of romance at their live shows. If you get a chance to see these guys live definitely don't miss out. Each song seems to be written for one of the different players in the band and each member gets excited to play their songs. They're all laughing and having such a good time, it makes you feel like you're in the band too.
Powerhouse!
author: Don J.I saw these guys a few months ago in SF and was totally blown away. I'm not really even a big jazz fan but this show was amazing. Very high level of musicianship and exciting arrangements. Don't be afraid of the Monster!!
