7ks infectious, unusual alternative rock runs the gamut from mid-90s alternative balladry to full-blown arena-sized assaults.* The L.A.-based foursome have rocked audiences from San Francisco to Phoenix to San Diego with adrenalized performances of their catchy, substantial rock songs. Their first single, bombsong, got airplay in several markets, from KCRW in L.A. to KOMP in Las Vegas. Now, with two EPs under their belt [produced by Dean Dinning of Toad the Wet Sprocket], 7k has laid claim to a strong sonic identity and has just released their debut full-length album, through the windshield.
Frontman Jeff Garvin founded the band with his high-school musical partner-in crime, bassist Carlos Rivera Jr., in 2001, in the heart of the now-famous O.C. 7k grew its roots in the music scene that gave birth to alternative greats like the Offspring and No Doubt, but it was in nearby Los Angeles that the budding rock group found their secret weapon in lead guitarist David Neil Black. Powered by Blacks ferocious lead, Riveras melodic bass work, and Garvins powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence, 7k quickly ground their own niche in the LA Music scene. Former Toad the Wet Sprocket bassist Dean Dinning discovered the band and produced their debut and sophomore EPs.
With some live TV experience and regional airplay under their belts, the foursome locked themselves in their Anaheim studio to write and self-produce their debut full-length album. In early 2005, with the record near completion, 7k added O.C. rock drummer Corey Manske to the roster. His tasteful grooves and crisp power put a fine point on the 7k sound.
With the release of their sophomore EP, knick knacks and apparel, the boys have launched a national radio campaign and are preparing for extensive touring in 2007.

author: Jeff CampbellFrom the first note to the last, this CD does not stop. It feels almost as if theb guys had stormed a stage, started rocking, and didn't stop; it's hard to put my finger on just how they managed to stamp each of these anthems with an individuality but also made them each add to the greater whole... though comprised of individual songs knick knacks and apparel is clearly one work of art. As always the band evokes fond memories of bands like Live and Verve Pipe, and make more subtle nods to 80's guitar-heavy bands, but they do it with subtle sophistication. Perhaps the finest moment on the whole CD is on "Suburban Desperado"... We're not only returned to a thematic preoccupation of the band, but we revisit a character from the last ep; and when the lyrics are reprised, a chilling description of the loaded gun which Jim Vickers now apparently holds, shivers went down my spine. It was a moment of almost opera-like drama.

This record is, in a word, unbelievable. 7K's sophomore effort, "Knick Knacks and Apparel", follows up on the solid musical and stylistic themes established on the band's first CD, "Through The Windshield", and admirably documents the Huntington Beach, California band's growing maturity. From the opening track to the disc's closing refrain, "Knick Knacks and Apparel" sets a thematic tone and provides an intimate glimpse into the life of the fictional Jim Vickers, an Everyman whose battles with formidable personal demons provide the setting and haunt the album's evocative lyrics. Jeff Garvin, the band's frontman, uses his soaring pipes and considerable storytelling ability to paint an engaging portrait of one man's emotional journey. Immersing oneself within this unblinking tale affords a stimulating alternative to the insipid, formulaic rock so common today, and for sheer gut-level impact, this album delivers. "Knick Knacks and Apparel", while certainly rich in subtly tense melodic imagery, also contains soaring, even orchestral, moments with the ability to astonish. Be it known that this band can rock as hard as anyone, and rarely indeed does an unsigned band offer something so polished. Picking up a copy of this young (amazingly) unsigned group's fine effort is more than worth your while.

author: Kevin SteinerI bought 'Through the Windshield' from the band last November while they passed through Flagstaff, AZ on tour. Each song reminded me of the performance and the great time I had enjoying cocktails with them afterward! We laughed and spouted movie lines til the sun came up!! This fun group of guys really puts on a great show and DOESN'T disappoint with their follow up for 'Through the Windshield'. My favorite track is the opener- 'Make it Up', because it makes me want to get up and DO SOMETHING! The DVD sparks memories of last November...what an awesome live band! The best part of the CD is that is sounds better the louder you play it. I can't get enough!! Keep cranking it out guys, and PLEASE come back to Flagstaff, AZ.
