Songs and improvisations for acoustic guitar and human voice

notes

QUICK WAY IN:
Listen to "Godless Weather" first. Then try "Out Of Range." "Kira," "Here & Now," and "Static" all are good starting points, also.

LONG WAY IN:
"It's A What?" is my second disc of acoustic guitar, songs and singing

Usually I play the electric guitar with a bass player and a drummer and sometimes other things. I like to play electric music that is heavily improvised, usually with the free parts appearing in or as the context of rocknroll song structure. An understanding of the trance-inducing power of loud repetitive sounds is important. So is good songwriting.

Some of my friends asked me to record with just acoustic guitar and voice, so they could hear the songs more clearly. Lindsay Vari offered me the studio time to record this CD in the spring of 2005

THE SONGS:
"Godless Weather" is about that feeling you get when someone is knocking on your door at 3:30 in the morning and you don't know who it is and there's no way to see who it is without letting them see you, too... Only, feeling that way ALL THE TIME

"Out Of Range" was written for Paul Johnson to sing with The Bond and was inspired partly by The Velvet Underground and partly by early Soundgarden

"Intra-Venus" is for Royal Trux and Art Rock, and is based on a poem ('Tar') by Chrstian Peet (www.christianpeet.com)

"Muthaship" was recorded live to minidisc in a picture framing store in the middle of the night. People seem to like this song. I have recorded it before. I will probably record it again

"Static" is a song by Neon Brown (www.neonbrown.com). Aside from recording at least 3 great discs, Neon Brown has been presenting two sets of improvised music for your life every other Wednesday at Mr Spot's Chai House for, like, five or six years now?

"Kira" was written on the piano to sound like early reggae. I used to sing it to my potted palm tree. There are a few other songs like that, but not on this disc. Now I like to sing it to my cat

"Skull Mountain" is some kind of King-Kong / World War W metaphor that follows one woman from her night job tending bar to a mountain overlooking a fireworks display at the edge of town one 4th of July

"Here & Now" is taking stock of my surroundings and realizing that I liked where and who I was, plus some poetic license. New words to old music

OTHER:
My rocknroll band is called Glass Goblins. Glass Goblins performs electric versions of several of the tunes from "It's A What?" including 'Godless Weather' and 'Kira.' You can check us out at
www.fivespace.net/glassgoblins

Since moving to Seattle in 2002, I have played in or performed with: Snoose Junction, The Bond, Outside The Lines, Indonesian Junk, The Shank, Cantenna, Underground Weather, Kaos Nites, Neon Brown Presents, Pawn Council Presents, Cop Bait (Street Unit), 321 Party, ZOOMSQUAD and Glass Goblins. I am now in Los Angeles playing catch-up with a few years worth of digital recordings

This music is presented as an offering to the culture, in hope that it is not too late

  • Five's best to date!
    author: J.P.

Five gets a 5 for this acoustic collection of mostly original material. My favorite is "Godless Weather," but they're all mind-bendingly brilliant. Five's gravelly voice and chiseled lyrics are uniquely his. Give this one a listen and you'll go back for more.

  • It's not a what ... it's a hit!
    author: Sierra

Godless Weather is addictive. Everything about it is perfect. It should be playing on every radio in the USA.

  • A voice to absolutely covet!
    author: A. L.

The songs are well crafted and the guitar work is good old fashioned down home fun. The selling point though is that unique, craggy, squeaky, jiving, bluesy wail of a voice that carries these songs to the Acoustic Blues Promised Land. It's that good folks. Check 'em out.
