notes
54 Seconds' music is at once ambient, melancholic, large, characterized by unexpected chord progressions and strange, catchy hooks. The band is spacious-almost experimental, but disturbingly accessible, with unusual harmonies floating above lush, vintage keyboards and the elegant guitar and voice of Spencer Gibb. Combining the best elements of electronica, pop and classic rock, 54 Seconds is late night headphone music at its best.

Pure Genius...
author: Sarah KhanThis is an absolutely brilliant album. As with all 54 Seconds music, every listen adds something new and different. Each and every song is hauntingly beautiful and has depth, which is very refreshing to find in music today.By far the best album I have heard in a long while.
Haunting, inventive and wonderful
author: Genevieve PicardOver the years, 54 Seconds' music has become my drug of choice. They've really outdone themselves with their latest opus. COMA is permeated with their talent, dedication, creativity and uncompromising craftsmanship. Each song flows into the next thanks to transitions that are inventive yet so smooth that the emotional journey is never interrupted, culminating in the sublime title song. The whole album reflects the band's maturity: it is substantial, audacious and exhilirating. I'm moved by the lyrics' poignancy, by their blend of candor and quirkiness, angst and hope. I love the unusual harmonies, the sheer beauty and energy of the melodies, the subtle use of sound effects and children's voices, the hints of past musical influences amidst a very modern, highly original and richly textured soundscape... all that makes 54 Seconds' style unique and wonderful. And of course, there's Spencer Gibb's voice, like a trembling embrace. When this guy sings he's not giving a performance, but the full measure of his soul. It is a very beautiful soul. This enhanced CD is generously filled with bonus and hidden tracks that are a fan's dream come true. I especially enjoyed watching Jen White's wonderful short documentary, Lowlight, which allows us to witness the agony and the ecstasy of the creative process that lead to recording the song Blown Away. All in all, Coma is a superbly mixed, haunting record that leaves the listener on a "high", at peace with the chaotic, cruel and alienating world that seems to have inspired most of its songs. So go ahead, treat yourself. Treat others. This sort of work is what keeps the music scene alive and exciting.

A musical journey that defies description
author: Geoff HoweEvery once in a while, an album comes along that is like nothing you’ve ever heard before, yet at the same time seems as familiar as a record you’ve known all your life. “Coma” by 54 Seconds is such an album. The majority of today’s mainstream rock bands are content to play by the book…54 Seconds, however has opted to continue writing the book, producing a record that synthesizes the best elements of Classic Rock, Prog, Jazz, and Alternative into something wholly original. A prime example of this is the track “complicated”: imagine jazz great Bill Evans jamming with Radiohead and you get a rough approximation of the track’s sound. “Coma” is a precious song-cycle that revolves around themes of loneliness and isolation and the band conveys this through every note. Spencer Gibb wails as if his life depended on it, selling every line to the listener. Stewart Cochran gracefully applies layer upon layer of keyboard and piano, and they interweave with each other, creating a soothing ocean of sound. Glenn McGregor rounds things out with his fluid bass playing, keeping things effectively tight without sacrificing warmth or feeling. But the album’s true secret weapon is Spencer’s restrained guitar playing, making prominent solo cameos carrying an emotional depth that no vocal could ever convey. All of these elements result in a dense and spacey rock sound. However, things get rough when they need to, most effectively on the piercing opener “watson349”, with a deep synth bass army blending with a eerie trumpet line to create a drunken phalanx of otherworldly noise. Throughout the album, various sound effects pop-up, although like some gimmicky studio tricks on other albums none of these snippets sound forced. All of them fit into the record’s sonic blueprint; an example: a needle on a turntable is ripped off of a spinning record in “elephant”, right before the track lurches into an arena sized circus waltz. Pretentious?...maybe. Pure ear candy?...most definitely. Overall, any fan of music that challenges both form and style would be advised to check this album out. “Coma” transcends any definite musical genre, instead it simply hits you in the gut and doesn’t let go. Maybe that's why I love it so much. As the final track fades away, I feel less like I’ve listened to a record, and more like I’ve been on a journey. And isn’t that the way music is supposed to be?

Groovy Hooks - Emotionally Charged
author: HeatherI have a lot to say about this CD and am having some trouble knowing where to start. I have listened to it so much, and each time I hear something new. I LOVE IT. It is difficult for me to put into words, but I think that that itself, says something about the record. Discovering the many hooks; from the melodies, to the rhythm, to the lyrics, to the production, is something. The songs are cathartic and create an emotional edge. The record hits you like a soundtrack to an internal movie.. The songs take you to a place, maybe in space, maybe not. Images are evoked and you get swept away. It is not a soundtrack, unless you count the film it evokes in your mind. The collaborative arrangements are layered with experimentation and classic elements. At the risk of sounding cliché, it puts you into an orchestral haze. Atmospheric and ambient with soaring effects from all of the instruments including a voice that feels close enough to touch. I love all the songs, but I would have to say that “Meaningless Conversation” is my favorite. In it, there’s a quiet reflection that is poignantly real. The chorus is sad, yet uplifting and man, does the melody get you. That is the beauty of this music and why it deserves deep listening. You owe it to yourself, to get this CD.
