IN HIGH COTTON

Five years after the release of their critically acclaimed SOUTHERN SOLDIER album, comes their newest, long awaited sequel; IN HIGH COTTON! Picking up where they left off, the boys are back in fine form and high style with their best work ever.

Here are more minstrel tunes, plantation melodies and military airs that were beloved and familiar companions to the hundreds of thousands of young men, from north and south. These songs were as much a part of them as knapsack, bedroll or bible when they left civil life behind to take up arms to fight and die for the causes they believed in during America's great Civil War.

IN HIGH COTTON will bring the listener back more than 150 years to hear music that was essentially laying the foundations of American popular music in the years leading up to the War Between the States. You'll hear timeless melodies created by American musical icons Stephen Foster and Daniel Emmett, such as The Old Folks at Home (Swanee River) and The Blue Tail Fly. Songs about life on the nation's earliest highways of commerce - America's mighty rivers. You'll hear songs of heartbreak and songs of joy and delight. The listener will hear minstrel melodies that were adapted by the soldiers to reflect the experiences of war and by making fun of those hardships in song, make them easier to bear.

The 2nd South Carolina String Band is recognized far and wide for their ability to breathe new life into music muted only by the passage of time and fashion - great music from our nation's turbulent past - making it exciting and enjoyable to the 21st century listener. IN HIGH COTTON is bursting with the same exuberant spirit that this band has always been famous for.

    author: Redding Hudson

I was amazed at the quality of the recording as I wondered how it would sound with the period instruments. It was great and the songs were so well done that I intend to purchase more by the 2nd South Carolina String Band! I play it everyday on the way to work and find myself humming the songs all day long.

  • Great authentic versions of old time music from long ago
    author: Jim Dunlap

I found this great CD at the Abraham Lincoln museum in Springfield Ill. I played in my car on the way home and I couldn't keep from tapping my feet and singing along. I was somewhat familiar with about most of the songs but they are done as the title says In High Cotton. Highly recommended for anyone who likes old-time music done in old-time way.

  • A Great CD and a Great Place to Buy it!

This CD was a pleasure to listen to and captures the period to a tee. The tracks are all very well done and I couldn't have been happier with the overall product. Kudos to the 2nd South Carolina String Band for the excellent content and to CD Baby for making it possible to buy such a great item.

  • Excellent, Stirring, thoroughly entertaining, good listening

They don't write songs or music like this any more. Listening to this CD is the nearest thing to stepping back into another time and place when people knew how to enjoy themselves and have good clean fun and appreciate the finer things in life.

  • Fascinating Musical Heritage
    author: Randy Ingersoll, Gardiner, Montana

This cd from 2002 is 2nd South Carolina String Band's most recent. I have listened to "Old Folks at Home" on repeat at least 50 times now, and am listening to it as I write this review. I've yet to tire of it. Clearly this is what's known as "timeless appeal." Somehow these songs still stir us today, despite our constantly changing tastes. 2nd South Carolina String Band lives and breathes the times of the Civil War and the music that accompanied it. Their enthusiasm is inspiring, and their interpretations are authentic and catchy. These songs give us a peek into a part of our history that is too rarely examined. The liner notes are especially helpful in providing background to melodies you may be familiar with, but whose origins are not so well known. Favorites of mine, besides "Old Folks at Home," are "De Blue Tail Fly" (a truly haunting tune) and "Down in Alabama" (a real sing-along toe-tapper!). I hope more cd's are to come!!

    author: Mike

These boys really make you feel like you are there in the old south, marching with Stonewall Jackson and singing the songs you love. From dancing music to minstrel songs to fife and drum, this album has it all.

  • excellent instrument playing, decent historical presentation

Love most of the songs, but some mediocre. Excellent historical rendition. I ordered it expecting to hear the same version of Bonnie Blue Flag in Gods and Generals, but it wasn't. I prefered the movie version. I suspect it is more like the real thing anyway. 3 out of 5 stars.

Good album like the music 3rd in the line of cd's by this group. All songs are really done well. You'll get a kick out of Granny will your dog bite. A moving song is Jordan is a hard road to travel.
