Acclaimed photographer of musicians Releases of a CD Compilation of healing music created during her struggle with Breast Cancer.
Irene Young used courage and strength to create “Glass Half Full, A Music Photographer’s Vision of Hope.” This CD highlighting 23 of her client’s most powerful and healing songs, was created to raise money and awareness for the national Breast Cancer Fund, and SHARE, a NY state-wide organization helping women with breast or ovarian cancer.
Diagnosed with breast cancer one year ago, Irene started her CD project at the same time that she started her chemotherapy treatments. Tapping into her contacts in the music industry, Irene looked to the artists that she had photographed for their album covers. The women musicians -- all influential in their own genres which range from rock to jazz to folk and even traditional Irish music -- donated their work for this CD. They include: Suzanne Vega; Ireland’s Queen of Music Mary Black; Windham Hill jazz favorite, Barbara Higbie; singer/activist Holly Near; New York’s endearing Suzzy & Maggie Roche; the legendary Laura Nyro; Christine Lavin; Patti Larkin; Cris Williamson; grammy winners, Cathy Fink & Mary Marxer, west coast favorite, Jennifer Berezan; and many more.
“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, many of the extraordinary artists and friends I had worked with over the years asked what they could do to help,” said Young. “The power of their music provided consolation and support during the most challenging of days. I wanted to share that experience with other women for their own healing process, to promote breast cancer awareness, and to champion the cause of independent music.”
Irene Young, a New York City-based photographer, has created images for more than 500 CD covers. According to Young, “The art of seeing does not start and stop with our eyes. The key to photographing people is to do so with a wide open aperture of the heart, with no judgment, and with a true belief that everyone is beautiful.”
$2 per CD sold is donated in equal parts to the Breast Cancer Fund and to SHARE Cancer Support.

With the release of this benefit compilation, music photographer Irene Young brings breast cancer awareness to the music industry with the help of so many musicians she's photographed. Diagnosed with breast cancer herself, she pull together this CD of donated music in the hopes that it would help anyone facing hefty challenges, as well as raise some money for the Breast Cancer Fund. The songs are full of light and life, coming from industry professionals who not only pack a punch with their weighty names, but with their alternating styles of folk, rock, jazz, pop, and everything in between. With Irene and so many prominent female musicians finding themselves at the mercy of strenuous chemotherapy treatments, there's no avoiding the fact that this disease is very real, but the CD is designed to bring hope and comfort. For the month of December, the regular $2 donation per CD sold is doubling to $4. All the more reason to get the CD.
Great uplifting music by generous artists for a noble cause!
author: japetuniaI saw a handful of the artists featured on this CD at a supporting benefit concert in Berkeley. I left the show feeling inspired & determined to do something in the fight against breast cancer. This is healing, empowering music with a message for ALL of us, not just those struggling with breast cancer. All musicians, songwriters, producers & record companies donated their royalties to the cause. The songs are incredible & well-performed by a diverse group of women musicians. This CD immediately went in my car & will no doubt stay there for some time.
