Rockabilly is an especially specific genre. Despite technological advances in hair goop in the past fifty years or so, the style hasn't deviated too much from slicked-up pompadours and thumping slap-bass lines (even psychobilly counterparts remain true to the general approach). Take stylized guitar riffs and bop 'em out with surf-pop drumbeats, and you've got the archetypal rockabilly sound -- nostalgia to the point of nausea. But that's the lure of retro rock, and 18 Wheeler is one hell of a squirming, greased-up bait. Charmed Life is modern, tattoo-friendly rockabilly, rampant with old rhythm-and-blues twang and twist-n-shout choruses. From classically named tracks like "Let's Bop" to "Hot Rod Man," 18 Wheeler keeps experimentation at a minimum while channeling the spirits of Bill Haley and Buddy Holly. It's wild dance-hall rebellion the way its been done before -- right down to the whiskey-soaked mantras and good ol' American-boy charm.

The Mighty 18 Wheeler comin’ through

I haven’t mentioned any rockabilly or swing music recently, so I thought I’d mention The Mighty 18 Wheeler. Those of you familiar with the best rockabilly in the industry probably have heard about these guys, and if you haven’t, well…you heard about them know. Recently their music has more of an edge to it, and could even be an introduction to metalbilly. Sounds goofy, I know. But the music is fantastic. Imagine if Brian Setzer joined AC/DC, you got Mighty 18 Wheeler.
The guys are no stranger to the music scene. Smokin’ guitars and vocals come from Bobby Smith. Bobby previously belted out tracks with Jumpin Jimes, one of my absolute favorite rockabilly groups. I’ll write up a little bit about that particular band in the near future. Bobby is awesome, he adds the perfect elements necessary to make their music complete. Covering the upright bass and vocals in the Mighty 18 Wheeler is Jimmy Kolodziej. And of course on the drums is Gt Skragg, a very familiar name to the local Denver music scene.
Simply put, this group of musicians know how to jam. So go put on your rockabilly shoes and start listening to The Mighty 19 Wheeler.

This is 18 Wheeler's 2nd studio recording, or electronic noise depending on who you talk to. The CD "Charmed Life" was recorded in Ft Collins Colorado at "The Blasting Room" owned and operated by Bill Stevenson former drummer of Black Flag, ALL, and The Descendents. www.blastingroomstudios.com It took us only 3 days to record the CD. Most of which was done LIVE! with very little overdubs to get that raw garage feel. Although we are a Rockabilly type band there are some pretty rockin tracks on this CD.
Our influences draw way back as early as the 40's, 50's, 60's 70's and 80's and current. When writing the material for "Charmed Life" we felt we should let all those influences in to our songs and not worry about trying to write the perfect Rockabilly record that has already been done back in the 50's. After all it is 2006 for God's sake!!! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did recording it, 3 12 packs later, hahahahaha

A more rockin' 18 Wheeler!
author: John DeWaldThis second disc from 18 Wheeler takes the cool approach of the debut CD and mixes in a little more of a rock 'n' roll approach. The opening track, "Rigormortis Cat", is way too addicting to be legal! I defy anyone to put it on the stereo and not start dancing or at least tapping their toes. Bobby and guys keep the tempo up for the next two tracks before slowing things down with the absolutely cool "Good Time Tonight" - it's the perfect soundtrack for a slightly rainy evening out. After that breather, you're taking back into more rockin' territory. And dig the cool intro and tone on "Out of Gas". Be sure to listen to ALL of "Hot Rod Man". I won't give away the surprise... Overall, this is a fantastic and fun disc. Just get it and crank it up loud!
